About

Mary Tate is a proud retiree of the University of Minnesota, where she dedicated over 25 years of service in various leadership and advisory roles. Most notably, she served as the Director of the University of Minnesota Medical School (UMMS) Center of Multicultural Affairs and Engagement (formerly the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity). In this role, Mary was a tireless advocate for equity, inclusion, and student success, leaving a profound and lasting impact on the UMMS community.

Throughout her tenure, Mary advised several key student organizations, including the UMMS Student National Medical Association (SNMA), the UMMS Minority Association of Premedical Students (MAPS), and the UMMS Vietnam Student Health Project. She also played a vital role in addressing institutional culture and student wellbeing as a member of the Medical School Harassment and Mistreatment Oversight Team and served as the Medical School's Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EOAA) Liaison.

Mary's legacy of mentorship and leadership has been recognized with numerous honors. In 2017, a group of grateful students established The Mary Tate SNMA Alumni Scholarship in her name. She was inducted into the national SNMA Hall of Fame in 2021 and is a recipient of the University of Minnesota's Tony Diggs Excellent Student Group Advisor Award, which honors exceptional dedication to student development and organizational support.

Beyond the medical school, Mary contributed her expertise as an Academic Health Services consultant and liaison for the University's Office of Conflict Resolution and served on the Office of Conflict Resolution Advisory Board.

Currently, Mary continues her commitment to education and community service as a board member for a charter school in St. Paul. She is married, a proud mother to her son, and a devoted grandmother to her beloved granddaughter. Mary is also thrilled to take on a new role as Director of Community Engagement and Advocacy in Minnesota for the Global Health and Education Partnership (GHEP), where she will continue championing equity and uplifting communities across the state.
